 Picture Talk        Lifecycle 2
The first stage of a butterfly's life is an egg.  Adult butterflies lay very tiny eggs on a plant's leaf or stem.  The eggs change color as days pass.  When the caterpillar is ready to come out of the egg (hatch) it wants to eat right away.  It has its first meal on the nearest leaf it can find.  Some caterpillars also eat part of the egg shell to give themselves a healthy start.
