The adult female butterfly finds a safe place to lay her egg.  She makes sure the leaf she will be good food for her baby caterpillar.  Then she lays her egg.  The egg rests until the caterpillar is ready to hatch.  When the caterpillar hatches it eats many leaves.  It will grow and change into a butterfly!
