Add the number & the year. We always add a "Happy 2000!" at the end & wave our arms up in the air.
Weather: pretend to give a weather report from each side of the car. The driver can report weather conditions in the front of the car: "Driver observes that we have rain drops falling on the front window. What conditions do you see out the left side?" Kids can report the weather conditions they discover by looking out their windows. "I see that rain is falling back here too. I see wind in the branches on the trees!" Ask for details: "Is the wind gentle? How much rain is there? Is the rain falling gently or hard?"
Special Activities:
Imagine a Butterfly Field Trip Pretend you are all butterflies and that you are flying to a special garden. Pretend all the houses you pass are flowers. Imagine whether a pink-house-flower would taste as sweet as a blue-house-flower. Imagine what a butterfly would like to find in a new garden: a fancy water fountain, fruit trees (bananas), flowers of every color.
Play "Butterflies going on a picnic." Vary the classic "Picnic" game. Each person takes a turn adding a fun or delicious item to bring along on a picnic, beginning with the first letter of the alphabet & continuing in alphabetical order. Just be creative, imaginative & silly trying to think of things that a butterfly might like. Example: "I a butterfly going on a picnic and I'm bringing my antennae." (bananas, caterpillars, drinks, eggs, fruit, and so on....)
Life Cycle Review This is a great time to review the story of a butterfly's life cycle. Make up a new character or draw from the Activity Sheets. Tell a story or ask questions so your child can share what she remembers from Butterfly School sessions at home. To add interest, ask your child to use her hands to act out the lifecycle.
| First, there is a leaf. A butterfly flies over and lays an egg. (hand is leaf) | |
| The egg opens & a caterpillar crawls out. It eats & eats. It grows & grows. When it is ready, it finds a place to rest. (finger crawls as caterpillar) | |
| It spins a chrysalis or its outer skin creates a pupa. While it rests, its wings grow. (hands cup together as pupa) | |
| When the butterfly comes out, it is ready to fly! The butterfly flies from flower to flower drinking sweet nectar! (one hand 'flies' or hook thumbs together & both hands 'fly') |
