Butterfly School Sample Sessions

We have put together three sample sessions using Butterfly School Activity Sheets to give you some ideas for your Butterfly School.

A Butterfly School Session = 15 minutes + Activity Sheets + materials.

Every Activity Sheet will remind you of three activities to share with your child: the date + a weather check + activity. Here is one way to approach a session, the samples will give you more ideas:

Begin: read the date and count together
              Next: do a weather check together
                    Then: Share the Activity Sheet's activity ideas
                            Last: Post your child's work!

                                              
Finally: Collect your child's work!

Before you Begin:
Be sure you have ready: Activity Sheet for the day and materials, including your basic Creativity Basket (paper, crayons, tape).

Here are three samples from Activity Sheets with an alphabet focus.

October 1, 2000

Today is the first day of October. Here is one finger. (hold up one finger) Now you hold up one finger. Great!

Let's look outside & see what the weather looks like.

It looks sunny today. See the sun shining across the street!

Here is the letter A. Here is capital A and here is lowercase a. This is big A and this is little a. A is for antennae. The butterfly has two antennae. Let's color the butterfly with crayons.

What do we have two of? Two eyes. Two ears. Two fingers. Your fingers can look like antennae. Let's trace two of your fingers here.

Finishing Up - Posting the Sheet:
This was great! Let's hang up your sheet where we can see it later.

October 14, 2000

Today is the fourteenth day of October. Let's count to 14. I'll say a number, then you say it! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,11, 12, 13, 14. Great!

Yesterday it was really rainy. Let's look out the window & see what the weather is today.

Look, there is still some water in puddles on the ground.

The sky looks gray but it is not raining now. Maybe it will rain again later.

Here is the letter N.

The butterfly drinks nectar from flowers. What do you like to drink?

I'll write that down here. The butterfly drinks nectar and you drink ___.

Let's decorate this. What color would you like for the flower?

Finishing Up - Posting the Sheet: Would you like me to draw another flower on the back of the sheet? Great! Let's put up your work.

October 20, 2000

Today is the 20th day of October. Let's count to 20. We can use all of my fingers and all of yours. 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. to 20.

When I woke up it was very windy. Let's look outside and see what the weather is doing now.

The sky looks clear and blue. The tree branches are moving. It is still windy.

This is the letter T.

Here is a picture of a tree. Some butterflies rest on trees. Some butterflies might lay their eggs on tree leaves.

Let's decorate this tree together. Would you like to make stripes?! That would be an interesting tree!

What do the trees look like in our neighborhood? I'll write that down.

Finishing Up - Posting the Sheet: I'll put tape on this sheet. Would you like to help hang it up next to yesterday's sheet? Look, there is your striped butterfly from yesterday!
