Butterfly School Diamonds

Celebrate diamonds all week with Denny, Robyn and a garden full of diamond flowers.  The diamond is a great shape for March.  It reminds us of kites as they soar up into the sky on windy days.  Sometimes making paper kites as window decorations is a more manageable project with little ones at home!  Use bright colors and try different types of paper:  newspaper, wrapping paper, even foil!  Add pretty ribbons, bows or stickers.

From my kitchen table to yours . . . quick tips for diamond fun.

  1. On the go!  Cut out a bunch of colorful diamonds -- all the same size --  and practice laying them out as paper tiles!  It is fun to build them into shapes.  This is an easy entertainment when you are on the go!

  2. Cut bread or toast into a diamond shape for an edible lesson in diamonds.

  3. Play diamond hide & seek.  Cut out a few paper diamonds.  Hide them in the kitchen and invite your child to find them!  Let him hide them for another round of fun.

Shape Collection Book

Teacher Tips
from Corinne Steigerwald

This is a great time to make a shape collection!  Gather six sheets of construction paper.  Use a paper punch to put three holes along the side.  (You can easily tie the pages together with ribbon or yarn when you are done.)

One piece will be the cover, write "My book of Shapes!"  Cut out paper shapes for your child to decorate the cover.

Page 1:  lightly draw four lines for a diamond shape.  Write "diamond."  Let your child trace over your guide lines and decorate the page.

Page 2: Write the word "circle" on the page.  Turn a small plate upside down.  Let your child trace around the outside edge (washable marker or crayon); help wherever necessary.

Page 3:  Draw a square and write "square." Discuss things with square shape - like presents.  Pretend this square is a box for your child.  Ask your child to draw the present she would like to see in the box!

Page 4:  Write "triangle."  Cut out triangles and let your child glue them to the page as he likes.

Add more pages as you wish, or complete the project by tying it all together!
