What are we doing well?  What could we do better?  How can we do it?

Year In Review - Part I   June 10, 2010

How many of us are walking around this June asking where the academic year went?  Like all of our best jobs, my work on School Committee affords an incredible learning opportunity.  I am fascinated by public schools - how they work, who works there, who learns there, what impact the educational process has on students and families, and what impact students and families have on the educational process.  Sitting on the elected side of the School Committee table provides a new vantage point, new opportunities and new challenges.

After I came home from college semesters, it usually took me a couple of weeks to unpack my things and re-organize my thoughts around the experiences of a school year.  I became a better scholar when I took time to review my notes and let the lessons I had learned settle within me.

School isn't quite out for the year, but our high school seniors have graduated and our last SC meeting was held on Tuesday night.  I suspect it will be a few weeks before I sort all of my materials from the various meetings and projects that unfolded this year.  Beside my desk I have two overflowing piles of paper.  They are cross-hatched in matching blue folders and well marked with my thoughts and questions.  But, they all are worthy of a review and further reflection so I am best prepared for the 2010-2011 year.

Over the summer I will post some of my reflections on the 2009-2010 year.  I thought it might be possible to post during the year, but found it was tricky to comment on issues that were unfolding in front of the committee.  Summer should be a safe time to comment on some of the highlights of the year.

Come back to visit this page and find some thoughts on these subjects:  Fran Ludwig's retirement, the impact/non-impact of School Committee members in personnel decisions, most proud moments, worst moments, reasons why more people should run for School Committee, ideas for more students to become involved in civics!
